For years I have watched my mother host hundreds of marvelous dinner parties with a glass of wine in one hand and a cookbook in the other. The key is to not stress. For the many times I’ve watched her put on fabulous dinner party after fabulous dinner party, I like to think that I’ve learned a thing or two along the way. Here is my list of do’s and don’t for a dinner party.
Do NOT save all of the cooking for last minute, prepare ahead of time.
Do have a fun playlist that is not too loud.
Do NOT rely on guests to bring everything, people can be very forgetful, be prepared.
Do offer people drinks the second they take their coats off.
Do have place cards so there is no controversy over seating.
Do NOT be pushy, if you offer someone food and they reject, move on, it’s very awkward for them to have to keep saying no if you’re being pushy.
Do make something you’re a pro at. aka Do NOT experiment with food. No new recipes for your guests, don’t make them the guinea pigs.
Do have flowers on the table.
Do use cloth napkins. That shit classy AND DO have the right amount of silverware.
Do have wine lurking on each end of the table.
AND WATERRRR, theres nothing worse then being parched at a dinner party and not being able to quench it.
Do make this a stress free environment. Even if you haven’t a clue what you’re doing, glue a smile on your face everyone will feel good anyways.
Do put yourself closest to the kitchen door for a quick getaway.
Do make dessert, always, even if you slab some ice-cream on a plate, just do it.
Do NOT leave the dishes for the next morning. Do them after everyone has left. You don’t want them looking like this and trust me they will.
